Started as a Family Business

The Breguet brand started as a family-owned company more than 250 years ago. It was founded by Abraham-Louis Breguet, who lived in France at the time. He, his son, and his grandson went on to run the company in succession looking for ways to stand out in the industry. They were successful by incorporating influences from other studies, as well as creating unique features. The Breguet hands are a specific design of watch hands where they have an opening toward the end. Breguet used this design so often and so well that they became a staple and a signature in Breguet watches.

Lasted Three Generations

Breguet remained a family business for three generations. Over those generations, the designs of Breguet watches changed significantly. New influences in the arts and sciences pushed designs toward a more modern look for the time. Improvements were made in the movements as well making them more accurate over time.

Eventually, Breguet was sold by the third generation of the family, Louis-Clement. He grew more interested in other areas of business and decided that it was time to move on. Interestingly, he sold the company to the one person he felt most comfortable and capable of leading the company into the future, Edward Brown. Brown was in charge of the workshop at the time. The business stayed in the Brown family for more than 100 years before being sold several more times.

Work Stopped During the French Revolution

Breguet was founded in France and stayed there for a long time. However, Abraham-Louis Breguet moved out of France for a short time because of the French Revolution. The climate in France grew dangerous quickly, especially for anyone of high standing. Afraid of what could happen to him and his family, they moved out of France until the Revolution ended.

During that time, he tried to expand into other areas. A successful shop was set up in Russia. Unfortunately, the shop was closed three years later because of political issues and the banning of French goods in Russia.

Watchmaker to the Elite

What really helped Breguet rise in status and popularity was gaining access to the elite in France. Joseph-François Marie, a well-connected mathematician introduced Breguet at court. From then on, he had access the through country’s elites, including Queen Marie-Antionette and Emperor Napoleon Bonapart.
